Leadership and Service

My examples of leadership and service are inextricably intertwined. I have not only volunteered my time in service of marginalized communities but have also demonstrated strong initiative by taking on sustained leadership roles within these service organizations. I have uniquely positioned myself to share my gifts and talents as a leader within my various spheres of influence at the university, school, and department levels, further asserting my commitment to the service of others. I am eager to continue my long history of service throughout my academic career. There are three branches to my leadership and service work:

President & Co-Founder, 2021 - 2025

Puentes is the first interdisciplinary Latine graduate student group at the University of Michigan and aims to create an equitable space that centers the intersectional identities of incoming and current Latine graduate students across schools, departments, and disciplines. The organization fosters a space of community, healing, and empowerment, where students feel supported and equipped to advocate for their needs and the needs of their community during and beyond their academic tenure.

As President and Co-Founder of Puentes, I played a pivotal role in fundraising efforts that would support the longevity of the organization. Rackham Merit Fellow Mentor

Peer Mentor, 2021 – 2022

The Rackham Merit Fellows (RMF) mentorship program offered guidance and resources to mentees regarding their Master's experience at UM. The program aids to support students with various backgrounds that are underrepresented in higher education.

Alumni Mentor, 2019 – 2020

Alumni mentors share professional and personal experience and expertise with current UCLA students, with a focus on partnering with first-generation students of color.

East Union High School

College Outreach Volunteer, 2016 – 2020

Presented information to students at a rural, underserved high school regarding the UC application process, admissions requirements, and AP/IB credit transfers with the goal of increasing access to higher education.

UCLA Spirit Squad

Recruitment Coordinator, 2016 – 2017

Managed and coordinated the “Walk Like a Bruin” program allowing potential student athletes to tour campus and shadow current students.

UCLA Fielding School of Public Health

In the department of Health Policy and Management I supported graduate students and faculty in achieving their academic goals. Specifically, I initiated programming for student success and professional development and supported student organizations in enacting thier missions and visions.

The NSTP program ensures that all new UCLA students and their families begin their journeys at UCLA with a comprehensive, positive introduction to Bruin life. In my roles, I provided an introduction to UCLA and its world-renowned academic programs, extensive services, and rich traditions.

Give Every Child a Chance

Tutoring Site Coordinator, 2013 - 2014

A federally funded program that offers free after-school academic resources to underserved communities. The goal is to support K-12 children who are struggling in school, giving them the opportunity to improve academically and become successful lifelong learners.

Represent graduate students at quarterly meeting to discuss the implementation of the Rackham Graduate School’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) plan.

Bouchet Honors Society Fall Forum

Participant and Subsequent Inductee, 2024

Attended a day-long forum at Howard University to address the theme “Disciplines and Their (Dis)Contents”. Cultivated thoughtful discussions addressing how diverse perspectives have historically and currently shape and shift disciplinary paradigms.

Committee Service to the Combined Program in Education and Psychology (CPEP)

Recruitment Committee, 2022 – 2025

Created programming that showcases the values of the CPEP program to newly admitted students to support the recruitment and enrollment of a diverse student body. Yielded 100% retention of admitted students to the CPEP degree program.

Executive Committee, 2023 – 2024

Advocated for changes to course offerings, degree milestones, advising expectations, and more to improve the experience of current and future Doctoral students.

Admissions Committee, 2023 – 2024

Advocated for the admission of a diverse pool of highly qualified applicants resulting in the largest cohort--comprised fully of students of color--the department has admitted in the past decade.
